An eating disorder is a mental illness in which a person develops harmful eating habits. It can be an after-effect of stress and anxiety in a person. But eating disorders can be dangerous to your health because they can cause severe illnesses like kidney failure or stomach infections.

There are many misconceptions and myths around eating disorders. That is why people often ignore it as a severe health condition. Lack of information about the eating disorder and Eating Disorder Treatment Therapy can lead to dangerous situations. It is essential to understand all the facts about the disorder and its treatments. The following points will explain that to you:

The Misconception.

There is a myth that eating disorders only happen to women or affluent people. Eating disorders have nothing to do with financial status or gender. It can happen to anyone irrespective of their gender, age, economic status, and culture. Most people who suffer from eating disorders never actually realize it and never get treated.

It is pointless to believe that an eating disorder has anything to do with a person’s weight. It can happen to anyone, be it an underweight person or an overweight person. But if a person is underweight and develops eating disorders, there is a greater risk of severe health conditions. An underweight person should maintain a healthy lifestyle and have a balanced BMI.

People choose to eat unhealthy food.

There is a myth that an eating disorder is nothing but an ailment that people invite out of bad habits and carelessness about their health. In some cases, carelessness can be a reason to develop an eating disorder. Still, there are also instances where it can grow in a person who has maintained a healthy lifestyle throughout his life.

There are three types of eating disorders. People need to understand the fundamental difference between the types of eating disorders to identify the problem within time and approach professional help.

Excessive eating

When one starts over-eating, it can lead to obesity and weight gain, feeling of shame, guilt, doing extreme workouts, etc. It is widespread around the world.

Bulimia Nervosa (Episodic-overeating)

It is an eating disorder in which a person gives in to excessive eating when they have too much stress or tension. It is an episodic eating disorder.

Anorexia Nervosa (Avoiding food)

It is an eating disorder in which people avoid regularly eating either because of being overweight or fear of gaining weight or stress. It can lead to being underweight and promote body-image issues in a person. It is not a common form of an eating disorder. However, it is the most fatal of all the three. Hence it requires immediate treatment.

If a person shows symptoms of any of the eating disorders mentioned above, you must consult an Eating Disorder Treatment Therapy specialist to help you out.

The specialists will adopt treatment processes like Family-based therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy to heal the ED patients recover. The primary purpose of these therapies is to find the root cause of the disorder, which can range from genetic, social, psychological to biological, diagnose the type, and address it with the best treatment process like therapy, promoting nutritional intake, and medications.
