Are you unloading your dishwasher and finding that your dishes have built up a layer of soot? Is your dishwasher giving off an unpleasant smell? Keep your dishwasher clean by following these care tips before you call for appliance repair in Toronto.
- Update the filter
Although every dishwasher is slightly different, most have a filter that collects large food particles that are too big to drain down the drain. You can detect the filter if you look at the place where the water flows out. The dishwasher may start to emit an unpleasant odor if food particles get here:
- The dishwasher filter should be removed.
- Shake out the leftover food and throw it in the trash.
- The filter should be cleaned with warm soapy water.
- Clean the area where the filter is located.
- Put the filter back in place.
- You may find that the odor coming from your equipment is gone.
- Inspect and maintain the rotating arms
Sometimes dishes get in the way of the dishwasher’s rotating levers when they are placed inside. These levers must move freely for the water to splash and wash the dishes. An important step in making sure your dishwasher is working properly is to inspect and clean the rotating arms.
Depending on how dirty they are with minerals, it may be necessary to remove the levers from the dishwasher and clean them with vinegar. If the contamination is not too severe, you can wipe the nozzles with a wire, pipe cleaner, or toothpick.
Use a soft cloth and a little warm soapy water to clean the sprayer arms.
To see if your dishes are any cleaner, run a full cycle in the dishwasher. If not, the problem may be a mechanical one, in which case you should contact a dishwasher repair company.
- Clean the racks
You may have noticed that some of your favorite mugs have chipped edges from the dishwasher. If your dishwasher racks are rusted, anything you put in the dishwasher may have chipped edges. How does your dishes get damaged? Because there is no longer a protective vinyl coating, your dishes can become chipped when exposed metal comes into contact with them during the wash cycle.
Look for chipping on each of the shelves.
If the shelves are severely rusted, replace them or use dishwasher shelf chipping solutions.
All of your dishes will be thoroughly cleaned the next time you wash them. Also, new or repaired racks will improve the appearance of your dishwasher.
- Clean the drain
After a while, the drain of your dishwasher can become clogged. Your dishes will come out of the wash cycle still unwashed because a clogged drain won’t allow dirty water to flow out. It’s located at the bottom of the dishwasher.
- Disconnect the dishwasher’s electrical connector.
- Remove the top and unscrew the drain.
- Use your hands to remove any significant pieces of food or debris from the drain.
- Use a brush or cloth to remove small particles from the drain.
- Reconnect the drain in the same way you disconnected it.
If you follow the above four recommendations, your dishwasher should work as soon as you try another cycle. Cleaning your dishwasher regularly will prevent scale buildup and damage to your dishes.
