Financial habits in India are changing faster than most people realise. A decade ago, opening a demat account meant visiting a broker’s office, filling out lengthy forms, and waiting days for approval. Today, a young professional in Bengaluru or a homemaker in Nagpur can start trading in the Stock Market within minutes using nothing more than a smartphone. This shift has been made possible by the rise of the modern Investing App, which has quietly democratised access to equities, mutual funds, and other financial instruments for millions of first-time participants who never imagined themselves as investors.

The New Face of the Retail Investor

The typical retail investor in India is no longer an avuncular fifty-year-old studying the stock table in the morning paper. They are people who typically have an income, are in their twenties or thirties, and are comfortable making financial decisions on their phone, having been exposed to UPI payments, online shopping and food delivery apps. The current wave of young investors was also first exposed to the financial markets during a phase of significant volatility and chose to participate in it to diversify their savings beyond fixed deposits and gold, and take control of the wealth creation process.

This current wave of young Indians, who are willing to learn and grow, is a marked contrast to their parents’ and grandparents’ cautious approach to stocks and equities.

Their attitude is informed by a belief that inflation will erode the value of cash savings; many Indians are self-educated in the art and science of stock picking, mutual fund selection and systematic investment plans.

Social media and digital forums have made a significant contribution to popularising financial literacy – in addition to enabling richer discussion around the virtues of direct equity, mutual fund SIPs and systematic wealth creation – and there is a noticeable level of comfort amongst the youth in talking about finance, markets, and investment options.

Simplicity has emerged as a key attribute in fueling this boom in popularity. The combination of faster processing power, simpler user interfaces and digitisation of financial services has enabled the young investor to set up an investment plan, track their returns, and update their risk profile, without the need for a stockbroker or a relationship manager.

Educational resources embedded in the investment process – such as videos that explain key concepts like portfolio management, market capitalization, and systematic investment plans – enable the amateur investor to become more confident in their transaction, and reduce reliance on traditional financial advisors for such straightforward tasks. There is greater value in encouraging young investors to learn financial literacy and utilise technology to make the most straightforward financial transactions.

One of the most interesting trends that stand out in this wave of young investors is the thematic focus. Instead of building diversified portfolios, the young investor is looking to pick “themes” such as renewable energy, digital infrastructure and consumption-led growth, and take a position on them – as a sector and/or stock. This shows increased financial maturity and confidence in the ability to not only evaluate companies but entire sectors and industries.

Challenges ahead

There is no doubt that the boom in popularity has seen a corresponding number of mistakes made by young investors who have jumped into the fray. Many young investors still need to understand the importance of a long-term view and are susceptible to the most common behavioural traps – such as riding too long on winning investments and selling off too quickly on losing ones. Similarly, there is confusion around market terminology and the taxation implications – especially on short-term capital gains.

While systematic investment plans (SIPs) and systematic withdrawal plans (SWPs) are helping investors build a routine around investing, a lot of young investors give up on SIPs at the first sign of a market correction – defeating the entire purpose of rupee-cost averaging and reducing volatility.

There is also a lack of awareness about the finer details of the Indian stock market, such as the importance of nominee details, the taxation implications of different kinds of gains and the importance of risk profiling before buying or selling stock.

A lot can be said about the role played by technology in democratizing access to financial services and encouraging greater participation by first-time investors. The popularity of financial blogs, social media forums and digital communities has helped drive engagement and awareness about the fundamentals of financial literacy, investment planning and systematic wealth creation. Technology has made it simple to build long-term wealth by investing small amounts of money in direct equity, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and SIPs – without the intermediation of stockbrokers or financial advisors.

While greater competition is expected in the future – as more digital platforms emerge to capture the attention of the first-time investor -there is likely to be increased focus on building user-friendly interfaces, superior analytics and recommendation engines to keep the first-time investor engaged and enhance the value of investing through such platforms. A lot of attention will need to be paid to ensuring that first-time investors are aware of the risks associated with each step in the investment process – from selecting an investment product to managing payouts and profit booking.
